A Lalor fashion student is set to have her designs displayed in Melbourne’s CBD.

Umi Rasmi, who studies at Kangan Institute, is one of six fashion students chosen to showcase her designs at Melbourne Fashion Week’s Bourke Street Mall exhibition.

A dress, titled Jellyfish, which is part of a wider collection inspired by Ms Rasmi’s hometown of Darwin, will feature in the exhibition from Friday until September 7.

The exhibition is one of six scattered across the city, showcasing innovative creations by Victorian fashion designers, jewellers, artisans, filmmakers and digital and video artists.

Ms Rasmi said she was encouraged by her children to pursue her passion for fashion.

After graduating, she hopes to create a design label that supports other women with young families by giving them a place to learn sewing, work and socialise, all while having their children cared for on site.

“I plan to work with my family to create a unique business that combines fashion and childcare,” she said. “I want to empower women, especially women experiencing hardship and struggling to raise a young family.”
