Mary Kouvas: The quiet force behind Northern Health’s clinical excellence

In the bustling corridors of Northern Health, where every note in a patient’s file can mean the difference between confusion and clarity, one woman has quietly transformed the way care is documented– and now, the nation has taken notice.

Northern Health clinical documentation integrity/ improvement co-ordinator Mary Kouvas has been named Australia’s first Clinical Documentation Specialist of the Year at the 2025 Clinical Documentation Improvement Conference.

The prestigious honour recognises her ground-breaking efforts in improving the quality, accuracy, and clarity of patient documentation– a behind-the-scenes role that is vital to patient safety and hospital performance.

“I’m very honoured to receive the very first CDS of the Year award and grateful for the nomination and support from Northern Health,” Ms Kouvas said.

From mentoring clinicians on the wards to educating junior doctors and implementing smart systems like Medtasker– which boosted documentation response rates from 35 to over 90 per cent– Mary has made a lasting impact across the organisation.

She’s also championed the CDI intern award, reinforcing good habits and keeping patient care at the heart of every conversation.

“CDI is a team effort,” Ms Kouvas said.

“It takes clinicians, CDSs, coders and executives working together to ensure documentation tells the full story and supports better outcomes.”

Colleague Diana Villalta praised Mary’s leadership and unwavering dedication.

“She just doesn’t lead, she uplifts everyone around her,” Ms Villalta said.

“Mary’s passion for education and accurate documentation continues to inspire and shape the future of clinical care.”
