A 21-year-old man has been charged after allegedly reaching speeds of 170km per hour in a stolen vehicle in Melbourne’s north earlier this morning.
Victoria Police’s Air Wing was patrolling when officers spotted a Toyota Hilux speeding along the Western Ring Road at approximately 12.40 am on Tuesday April 8.
Further checks revealed the vehicle had false number plates.
The police helicopter tracked the vehicle until it was abandoned in Weemala Court, Meadow Heights, guiding officers on the ground to the location. A search of the area led to the alleged driver being found hiding at the rear of a Tarcoola Avenue home.
The Dallas man was taken into custody and charged with multiple offences including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, reckless conduct endangering life, speeding dangerously, breach of bail, and drug possession.
Detectives will also interview him in relation to the theft of multiple vehicles in the area.
The stolen vehicle was confirmed to have been taken from outside a gym on Pascoe Vale Road, Coolaroo, on March 30.
The man has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
