Making residents’ voices heard

A grassroots movement aimed at elevating resident voices across Whittlesea is gaining momentum, with local group Better Deal Whittlesea (BDW) setting its sights on civic influence over the next year.

“I started BDW because I was tired of seeing my community going backwards,” group founder Nick Brain said.

A defining moment came last year when he spotted a pile of asbestos-contaminated construction waste dumped near a service station in Epping North.

“There is a school just down the road from there…it was there for at least three weeks before it was removed,” he said.

The incident highlighted the need for stronger advocacy.

“Existing resident groups catered to select suburbs only,” Mr Brain said.

“I identified a need for a new group to achieve a more joined-up resident voice across Whittlesea.”

Engaging residents has been no small feat.

“Residents can be naturally sceptical when first encountering BDW,” Mr Brain explained.

“There are days when I’ve had second thoughts…but there are rewarding moments,” he added.

Looking ahead, BDW aims to champion deeper community consultation and campaign for essential infrastructure.

“BDW is eager to get more residents involved…to help shape its future direction.”
