The bulbs of more than 9000 street lights will be replaced with models more than three times as energy-efficient across Hume this month.
The council wants to lead by example so has begun the mammoth task while simultaneously helping others to lighten their environmental footprint.
‘Lighting the Way’ began two years ago with the help of a federal government grant of almost $1.9 million.
The council’s target is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3600 tonnes a year, which is equivalent to taking about 900 cars off the road.
The $3.4 million project has so far led to T3 tube lights being installed at the Broadmeadows Netball and Basketball Stadium, Craigieburn Leisure Centre sports stadium, Sunbury’s Aquatic and Leisure Centre gym and the Boardman Stadium, and replacing thousands of street lights.
