Lifeline for locals

In response to rising cost-of-living pressures, Whittlesea council has strengthened its support for residents, businesses, and community groups struggling to meet financial obligations.

At the council meeting on Tuesday May 20, council endorsed an updated Financial Hardship Policy, aimed at easing the burden on those doing it tough.

The policy offers a broad safety net for people experiencing genuine financial difficulty, including flexible payment plans, deferred payments, waivers on interest and debt collection costs, and help connecting with external support services.

Recognising the growing strain on household budgets, Whittlesea mayor Martin Taylor said council was determined to help.

“We know that many in our community are doing it tough right now, particularly in the face of rising living costs,” Cr Taylor said.

“As a council, we are committed to supporting the most vulnerable members of our community during these challenging times.”

A key feature of the policy is the council’s dedicated Financial Hardship Support Officer, who guides applicants through the process and provides personalised assistance.

“Our updated Financial Hardship Policy has been carefully designed to enable us to provide much needed assistance and support,” Cr Taylor said.

“Whether it’s relief for overdue rates or tailored support for those in crisis, this policy will help ease the stress for people who may be already struggling to keep up.”
