Libs promise Whittlesea police station upgrade

Whittlesea’s ageing police station will get a $2 million upgrade if the Liberal Party wins next month’s state election.

The community has been campaigning for a revamp of the station, with an action group writing to the government last October asking for the project to be included in this year’s state budget.

Little work has been done to the station since it was built in the 1960s, raising concerns about the conditions police officers are being asked to work in.

Liberal candidate for Yan Yean Meralyn Klein, who met with concerned residents last week, said Whittlesea had experienced “drastic” population growth and needed an upgraded police station.

“It is vital that the Whittlesea community has the resources it needs to fight crime and protect our communities,” she said.

“The current facilities in Whittlesea are no longer acceptable for a station that not only provides police response in Whittlesea, but surrounding suburbs and townships.”

Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue said: “The hard-working men and women of Victoria Police deserve a modern, contemporary police station to enable them to perform their important work in keeping the local Whittlesea community safe,” he said.

Yan Yean MP Danielle Green has previously raised concerns about the condition of the police station, and has vowed to continuing fighting for an upgrade.
