Labor makes schools election pledge for Whittlesea and Hume

By Laura Michell

Six new schools will be built in Hume and Whittlesea over the next four years, if Labor is re-elected on Saturday.

The party has pledged to build Greenvale North West, Merrifield  West, and Edgars Creek primary schools by 2021, followed by Greenvale Secondary School, Kalkallo Common and Wollert East primary schools by  2022.

Four other schools – Aitken Hill, Ashley Park and Beveridge West primary schools and Craigieburn Secondary School – are also under construction
and are scheduled to open in 2019 and 2020.

Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the new schools would mean northern suburbs students would access to great facilities, close to home.

As reported by Star Weekly, Hume council has been lobbying for more schools to be built in its growth suburbs.

Mayor Carly Moore said the latest school’s pledged was good news for Hume.

“We know that families benefit immensely when schools are close to home, particularly in Hume’s growth areas; and that is why we are calling on all parties to commit to delivering schools in Hume’s growth areas this state election,” she said.

“The timely delivery of schools in growth areas will also ensure families are not required to spend unnecessary time in their cars travelling outside of Hume to get their children to school.”
