Labor’s Kathleen Matthews-Ward will succeed Frank McGuire as Broadmeadows MP.
Ms Matthews-Ward had secured 47 per cent of first preference votes on Sunday, with 60 per cent of votes counted.
She led Liberal candidate Baris Duzova 66.24 per cent to 33.16 per cent on a two-party-preferred basis.
The electorate recorded a nine per cent swing towards the Liberals.
In a post to Facebook on Sunday, Ms Matthews-Ward thanked the people of Broadmeadows for voting for her.
“Thank you to the people of Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Glenroy, Hadfield, Jacana and Oak Park for your faith in me and Labor,” she wrote.
“I will do my very best to serve you all and I will continue to work hard every day to be your strong local representative and advocate.”
