Intersection pledge

Traffic lights will be installed at a horror intersection in the Whittlesea township if Labor wins the federal election.
Visiting Whittlesea on Friday morning, McEwen MP Rob Mitchell pledged $900,000 to install the lights at the intersection of Plenty and Wallan roads and Laurel and Macmeikan streets.
According to VicRoads’ database of ‘casualty crashes’, the intersection has been the site of six such crashes involving serious injury in the past five years.
VicRoads’ guidelines indicate that locations with three or more casualty crashes in the preceding five years are classified as accident blackspots.
As reported by Star Weekly, Whittlesea council last week urged VicRoads to install the traffic lights after receiving a petition signed by 1052 people.
Mr Mitchell said the intersection was “one of the worst” for traffic and danger to pedestrians.
Lead petitioner Kristie Richmond said the lights would mean that children could cross the road safely to get to Whittlesea Primary School.
