Craigieburn local Vicky Li Vines is one of the many female engineers working on major roads projects across the state.
Friday, June 22 is marked as international women in engineering day, a celebration which is now into its 10th year.
Ms Li Vines has been with Major Road Projects Victoria for five years, working on a range of projects including the western roads upgrade to her current role as a project manager on the Craigieburn Road upgrade.
Ms Li Vines has been instrumental in the continual development of the project.
She said she was drawn into a career in engineering due to her interest in shaping communities for the better. A task she said is “challenging and fulfilling”.
“I built and lived in my first house here in Craigieburn back in 2009, from then until today, the community has grown so much,” she said.
Ms Li Vines said as diversity in the suburbs grows it’s important to have a wide range of people, including a diversity of genders working on infrastructure projects.
“You don’t need to be good at maths to be an engineer, I think there’s a lot of misconception there,” she said.
“A willingness to get things done, being organised and being able to communicate with others, are some of the fundamentals to being an engineer.”
