Improving connections for multicultural seniors

The state government is supporting seniors from multicultural communities to foster stronger community connections and promote vibrant local activities.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Colin Brooks announced on June 24, that more than 1,000 multicultural seniors’ organisations will benefit from a significant investment in the Multicultural Seniors Support program.

An investment of $2000 is being provided to each community group to deliver social and cultural activities, purchase equipment and establish digital support networks. Recipients also benefit from complimentary public liability insurance and group accident cover.

Organisations already funded through this program include Portarlington Maltese Pensioners Association purchasing new equipment, supporting running costs and holding celebratory events, and Sankat Mochan Senior Group in Huntingdale which will host social activities for its 300+ members.

German Friendship Society Bendigo is also being supported to facilitate trips to Tatura, visits to a local German museum, as well as traditional meals and dancing to celebrate Christmas in July and birthdays for its members.

More than 120 members of Victoria Tamil Senior Citizens Benevolent Society Australia in Mount Waverley are being supported to foster social connections through excursions, exercise and digital literacy classes, as well as festivals and events which promote Tamil language and cultural traditions.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Colin Brooks said the government is proud to fund activities and services that promote the wellbeing of thousands of multicultural seniors in Victoria.

“We know multicultural Victorians makes enormous contribution to our state – and I commend all the organisations delivering programs that provide genuine connections and support for senior community members,” he said.
