Hume’s young achievers recognised at Corporal Baird awards

Four young people from Hume have shared in $5000 after being announced as the winners of the Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards.

The Hume council awards celebrate the memory of Corporal Cameron Baird – a Gladstone Park resident who was killed in Afghanistan in June, 2013.

Corporal Baird became the first Australian commando to be awarded a Victoria Cross –Australia’s highest military honour for bravery.

Mayor Carly Moore said the awards are presented to young people who lead by example.

Craigieburn’s Rihan Rofaeel, 16, and Isobel Symeoy, 20, received the Leading from the Front Acheivement Award for their tireless commitment to volunteering and supporting people in need.

Rihan received $2000 to assist her to pursue her work in achieving the goal of no hunger for all Australians.

Isobel received $1500 to support her dream of becoming a paramedic.

Sunbury’s Adam Marguglio, 15, and Craigieburn’s Tamanna Qarar, 20, received the Gaining Ground Encourgement Award.

Adam received $500 to further his musical education, while Tamanna was awarded $1000 to help her educate women to gain education and financial independence.
