Hume council is stepping up its fight against illegal dumping, urging residents to help call out offenders through a dob in a dumper campaign.
Illegal dumping has been labelled a major issue for Hume, costing it over $5 million annually in collection and clean-up fees, according to councillor Naim Kurt.
“Illegal dumping costs this council over $5 million a year – money which should be going to roads, parks and services, not cleaning up after people who treat our streets like a rubbish tip,” Cr Kurt said.
Launched in August, the initiative encourages locals to report rubbish dumped in public spaces and name and shame those seen illegally dumping, with the aim of keeping Hume’s parks, roads and neighbourhoods clean and safe.
Council said illegal dumping is not only unsightly but also harmful to the environment and public health, with officers spending countless hours each year cleaning up waste which should never have been left behind.
Residents who witness dumping or suspicious behaviour can report it directly to council by calling 9205 2200 and selecting option four, or via the Snap Send Solve app at www.snapsendsolve.com.
To support the crackdown, council is reminding the community of free waste disposal services available, including hard waste collection, Hume Clean Days, bundled branch pick-ups, tree mulching days and access to the Resource Recovery Centre.
