Hume land back on the market

Hume council has extended the window for developers to find a tenant for an “exciting” lot in Broadmeadows’ Hume Central Precinct.

Wilbow and Deal Corporation has until the end of 2026 to publicly market the land across from Broadmeadows Leisure Centre which is for sale.

At the November 8 meeting, Councillor Karen Sherry said there have been ongoing commercial negotiations regarding the land on Pearcedale Parade which is currently used as a car park.

“Developers will be able to go out and test the market further to get certainty,” she said.

“There could be a very exciting outcome for Broadmeadows with white collar jobs, hospitality jobs and site activation.”

In May 2025, council rejected a proposal to build an 88-room hotel and large retail development on the land.

Councillor Sam Misho said the previous proposal would not have protected rate payers.

“I had real concerns about the financial risk that the council would have been exposed to particularly around underwriting tenancy,” Cr Misho said.

“We challenged the status quo instead of simply accepting what was placed in front of us.

“Extending the heads of agreement does not commit council to anything… it allows the developer to continue improving their proposal… so it is more mature [and] more transparent.”

Councillor Naim Kurt produced a Broadmeadows town center study from 1976 that mentioned hotel and motel facilities.

“It’s been almost a 50-year journey to get to this point… it’s probably taken a little bit too long,” he said.

“The population is going to triple in size here and we do not have essentially the infrastructure to meet all of that.”
