Westmeadows local Aunty Jo Russell has been recognised among Victoria’s most inspiring older residents, receiving the Emerging Impact Award at this year’s Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.
A proud Wiradyuri woman, respected Elder and Hume Enviro Champion, Aunty Jo was honoured for her tireless efforts fostering community connection and cultural learning through the Westmeadows indigenous and Community Gardens.
Over the past six years, Aunty Jo has transformed the space into a hub for reconciliation and sustainability through the creation of a fibre food garden, a yarning circle and strong ties between residents, schools and local groups.
She regularly leads bush food and fibre walks, encouraging others to learn about country with compassion and curiosity.
Her recent outreach to a local school has helped more than 200 students attend reflection days at the gardens for two consecutive years, helping raise funds for a new tool shed.
Authy Jo also hosts kindergarten groups which offer a culturally safe environment for nature play and connection to country.
Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt all 2025 award recipients reflected the “enormous contribution” older Victorians make across the state.
“Their dedication continues to shape a stronger, more caring Victoria for us all,” she said.
