Hume council’s safety plea on festive lights

Hume home owners are being encouraged to think about traffic and pedestrian safety before flicking the switch on their festive light displays.

Hume council is asking residents who are planning to deck their houses in Christmas lights, and think their displays will attract high volumes of visitors, to get in touch with its traffic management team to discuss any concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety.

Mayor Carly Moore said the council wanted to ensure traffic around popular Christmas displays was managed as safely as possible.

“Council knows that many residents spend weeks, months and sometimes years creating their magnificent, awe-inspiring displays and we want everyone to enjoy them safely,” she said.

The council is also calling on residents to be aware of traffic as they make their way around the neighbourhood displays.

Cr Moore said drivers and pedestrians needed to be courteous, considerate of others and extra careful.

“Exploring local Christmas light displays can be a magical and joyful experience and for many Hume families, it’s an annual tradition,” Cr Moore said.

“As you drive or walk in and around local streets this festive season, it is really important to pay attention and be safe.

“By doing a few practical things, you can help to keep you, your family and others safe and happy this Christmas.

“This includes obeying road rules, holding children’s hands, not rushing and being mindful of people and property.”
