The Victorian government has submitted a draft plan for the community’s consideration for the Northern Metro Region Land Use Framework Plan.

Hume council endorsed the plan at a council meeting last night, and is requesting feedback from the community.

“There’s a number of areas for improvement in the plan,” Cr Karen Sherry said.

The plan includes proposals for better direction of multiple sites in Broadmeadows, including Broadmeadows Railway Station, Broadmeadows social housing and the influences of the airport flight path on Broadmeadows.

Additionally, the plan will propose to improve transport infrastructure, enabling employment land, higher-density housing and housing diversity, better activity centres, preferred green wedge land uses, and sodic soil concerns in growth areas.

The plan is part of the Victorian government’s ‘Plan Melbourne’ project and “it fills another gap in the state government strategy,” Cr Sherry said.

The submission also outlines how the plan will consider environmental sustainability and recommends various changes.

Those changes include retaining natural wetlands and drainage networks, considering sodic soil affected land, reducing and managing environmental risks for industrial fires and tree planting, among other projects.

Directions for climate change adaptation are also included, such as changing from gas to renewable energy, monitoring areas for urban heat, tree planting, integrated water management, reducing waste and using recycled materials for infrastructure.

Cr Sherry said any late additions are welcome, “but I think it’s a great submission”.

Community feedback can be submitted via the ‘Engage Victoria’ website, which will be available until late October.
