Hume council is helping residents take the fight against unsightly tagging to the next level, with free graffiti removal kits available.

There are two types of kits, one for removing graffiti from painted or Perspex surfaces and another for brick and stone facades.

Mayor Adem Atmaca says the council took a zero tolerance approach to illegal tagging. ‘‘It is ugly and can spoil the appearance of a neighbourhood,’’ Cr Atmaca says.

‘‘We want to help residents to scrub away the tags and other spray-painted scrawl that make many people feel frustrated and, at times, unsafe.’’

The packs include cleaning liquids, cloths, paint brushes, safety goggles and gloves.

Council data shows graffiti removal costs Hume ratepayers about $130,000 a year.
