Hume backs $6.25m hockey boost

Hume’s council has taken a big step forward in the future of hockey in Melbourne’s north after awarding a $6.25 million contract for the long-awaited second stage of the Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Centre in Craigieburn

During council’s Monday 27 October meeting, council awarded the contract for the project to Constructive Group.

Construction is projected to take about 12 months once works commence.

The project will deliver a new sports pavilion, a second full-sized synthetic hockey pitch, LED lighting, and upgraded pathways to connect to the existing facilities at 450 Grand Boulevard.

The pavilion will include changerooms, an accessible toilet, kitchen and kiosk, umpire rooms, storage areas and a shared office and social space for the growing number of local hockey clubs.

The report presented to council noted participation in hockey has surged since the original facility opened, leading to the establishment of three local clubs in Hume Hockey Club, Craigieburn Falcons Hockey Club and United Khalsa Hockey Club.

Cr Ally Watson said she was glad to see the sport kept alive in the area.

“It’s great to see hockey alive and well in the Hume community,” she said.

“I’m really excited about this. Hockey is a really interesting and fun game.”

Council confirmed a $1.9 million federal government election commitment toward the construction of the second pitch, with an additional application planned to be lodged under the Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program by 1 December.

The development will focus on sustainability features in solar panels, heat pump systems with battery backup, and water-sensitive urban design in the car park and pitch areas to reduce environmental impact.

Cr Jim Overend said the development is “ultimately great news for our hockey community and residents of Hume”.

Construction is expected to begin early next year, with completion anticipated for late 2026.
