Three people were taken to hospital this morning after the house they were in was hit by lightning in Bundoora.

Fire crews were called to the incident on Betula Avenue about 8.05am after multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) reported the blaze.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a significant fire issuing from the roof of a single storey brick residence, and threatening to spread to an adjoining property. The fire was brought under control about 9.15am.

Three patients who had self-evacuated were treated on scene by Ambulance Victoria paramedics and transported to hospital.

Specialist fire investigators deemed the fire was started by lightning.
