Police have vowed to continue patrols on Aitken Boulevard until there is a “dramatic reduction” in the number of drivers speeding on the road.
Police from Fawkner Highway Patrol have upped patrols on the road between Craigieburn and Greenvale over the last week, amid increasing community concerns about drivers ignoring the road’s speed limit.
The road, which has a single lane in each direction, was only completed in March and has a speed limit of 60 km/h.
Fawkner Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Yvonne Upton said police were using patrols and mobile speed cameras to catch drivers doing the wrong thing.
On Sunday, police caught one driver speeding at 109 km/h- 49km/h over the limit.
Senior Sergeant Upton said police were catching people driving at excessive speeds.
She said most drivers that were caught were driving at 80km/h or more.
“There are a lot of vehicles being impounded,” Senior Sergeant Upton said.
“Enforcement will continue up there.”
Senior Sergeant Upton reminded drivers that the road’s speed limit had been set at 60km/h because it was a single-lane carriageway, with no dividing barrier,
“If it has a higher speed limit and we have a head-on collision, we will have people with serious injuries,” she said.
