Victoria’s public healthcare workforce has grown by almost 50 per cent over the past decade according to the state government.
On Wednesday, Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas claimed Victoria had experienced the biggest yearly growth in healthcare workers in its history – recording a 6.7 per cent jump in new roles, with 7,664 nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and other front line positions filled in the year to June 2024.
Since May 2022, Ms Thomas said Victoria’s healthcare workforce had grown by 12.6 per cent, with 5,800 more nurses and midwives and 2,217 more doctors joining the system.
Overall, the government claimed more than 40,000 nurses, midwives, doctors, allied health professionals and other hospital staff had been added to the state’s health systen since its election in 2014.
“Only our Labor Government will continue to support and invest in our dedicated health workforce – because we know how important they are in delivering world-class care for all Victorians,” said Ms Thomas in announcing the figures.
“Creating a strong pipeline of new roles in our hospitals is critical as our population continues to grow – that is why we continue to focus on attracting and retaining staff through upskilling opportunities, scholarships and bonuses.”
