Whittlesea residents can have their say on how they would use a road running from Bundoora to Beveridge.
The council is looking for community feedback on how residents would use a proposed new major road, known as the E6.
The state government has reserved an 11-kilometre section of land that runs north to south through the municipality to be developed into a major road or freeway in the future.
The land starts at the Metropolitan Ring Road and extends through Thomastown, Mill Park, Epping, Wollert, Woodstock and Donnybrook to join the Hume Freeway and the future Outer Ring Road at Beveridge.
The council has long held the view that the road should be a four-lane arterial road, while some residents are calling for it to be built as a freeway.
But earlier this year, councillors agreed to allow new community consultation to influence its position on how the road should be constructed.
Mayor Ricky Kirkham said the council wanted to get a better understanding about how residents would use this future road to assist it as it lobbies the state government for road improvements.
“We want to get a stronger snapshot from our community about how they would use this road as part of their day-to-day lives,” he said.
Residents can have their say by completing an online survey at www.whittlesea.vic.gov.au/e6 until Sunday, October 15.
Hard copies of the survey will also be available from the council offices, libraries and community activity centres.
