Hume council is seeking feedback on its draft Graffiti Management Policy.
The draft policy aims to tackle the ongoing graffiti issue across the municipality, with Cr Daniel English described in the 24 November council meeting as ‘disgusting’.
“Behind closed doors, councillors have been working hard with the officers to try and come up with some of the best ways to tackle this disgusting behaviour in our community,” he said.
“The current Graffiti Management Policy does not do enough for our community to fix this disgusting problem we have.”
Cr Naim Kurt revealed how much council spends per year cleaning up graffiti across the city.
“Our council spends … $230,000 every year cleaning up graffiti, and I think that there’s a feeling across our community that probably we can put in a little bit more to make our community look like a better place,” he said.
As part of the policy, council will seek to undertake education programs within the community and schools to highlight the financial and emotional damage that results from graffiti vandalism.
The policy outlines a number of preventative measures council plans to undertake, including public art, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, public lighting, and restricting access to large surfaces.
Feedback is open now on the draft Graffiti Management Policy, and will close on 5 February. This feedback will then be used to help form the final policy before its adoption at a later council meeting.
