Green thumbs needed

A triple bypass was what led Steve Allport into the garden almost seven years ago.

The operation left the Lalor resident with weakened heart muscles, forcing him to quit his job with a printing company and take stock among the flowers at the Peter Lalor Community Garden, at Lalor.

He’s taught himself basics like when to plant and fertilise, and what grows best with what.

Now he’s calling on the community to join him once, twice or three times a week to tend the garden’s eight shared plots.

If you’re keen, be at the garden at Peter Lalor Secondary College between 10am and 2pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. An annual membership fee of $10 applies.

Details: 9465 0416.
