A former road reserve in Lalor will be transformed into a vibrant new residential street after Whittlesea council approved plans for a 25-lot subdivision set to deliver much-needed homes and boost safety around the Whittlesea Public Gardens.
Endorsed at the May 26 council meeting, the project forms a key part of the Whittlesea Public Gardens Master Plan, which aims to revitalise the area into a more inviting and family-friendly destination.
A new 15-metre-wide local road linking Barry Road and Benaroon Drive will be constructed, offering street trees, landscaping and 39 indented parking bays.
These features not only support future residents but also enhance access to the neighbouring gardens.
The idea for housing along the eastern edge of the park was shaped by community input.
During early consultation, residents raised concerns about poor visibility into the gardens, with antisocial behaviour deterring locals from visiting.
The new homes and roads will help address those concerns through increased passive surveillance from residents, drivers and pedestrians.
Mayor Martin Taylor said the development would “make excellent use of under-utilised council land to deliver new homes in Lalor, adjacent to a beautiful open space.”
“Through the master planning process for the Whittlesea Pubic Gardens, we heard community concerns about antisocial behaviour in the park and this informed the proposal for this development,” Cr Taylor said.
“Once the new street and homes are delivered, there will be improved perceptions of safety, encouraging many new visitors to enjoy the wonderful new facilities that the council has built there in recent years.”
Those facilities include a playground, learn-to-ride circuit, skate park, basketball courts and climbing wall.
An off-leash dog park is set to open soon, with further upgrades–including new paths, water features and parking–on the horizon.
