Great Northern Bake Off brings hospital staff together

It was sponge cakes versus biscuits at the Northern Hospital earlier this week, for the first Great Northern Bake Off.

Staff put their baking skills to the test for the competition which was held as part of Northern Health’s inaugural Conversations on Mental Wellness week.

Staff created sweet treats that reflected the area they work in, with the baked goods judged on taste, theme alignment and innovation.

The anaesthetic department was declared the overall winners, with the hand therapy department recognised for the technical difficulty of their cake.

The competition judges were Northern Health Siva Sivarajah, chief legal officer John Snowdon, organisational capability director Emily Dawson, and board directors Peter McWilliam and Philip Bain.

Chief nursing and midwifery officer Jodie Ashworth, who organised the event, said the bake off was about bringing staff together.

“Wellbeing is sometimes about coming together and sharing simple things. The effort put in showcases how much care and pride our staff take in their work,” she said.
