Local football and netball clubs can apply for a share of $600,000 to improve their club in exchange for spreading road safety awareness.

Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has teamed up with the state government for this year’s TAC Club Rewards program, encouraging local clubs to promote road safety to members during the season.

Now in its fifth year, the program allows AFL Victoria-affiliated football and netball clubs to apply for rewards of up to $10,000 to spend on club initiatives like club transport, new equipment and uniforms or facility upgrades.

So far this year, 121 people have died on Victoria’s roads, a 6.2 per cent decrease from this time last year (129).

As part of this year’s program, clubs will be asked to start conversations and be part of the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, with the tagline – ‘Show up for your team. Slow down on the road’.

Head of AFL Victoria Greg Madigan said travel is a huge part of local football, making it an extremely topical issue.

“Our footballers can cover hundreds of kilometres on the roads every year as they travel to and from training and games, so road safety is something that needs to be front of mind,” he said.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne is looking forward to another year of working with local clubs.

“Last year, we supported more than 250 grassroots clubs for shining a light on road safety and we want more clubs to get on board this year to help ensure more Victorians can get home to their loved ones safely,” she said.

Last year, a host of clubs in Hume and Whittlesea received the grant, including Thomastown FNC, Craigieburn FC, and Mernda Junior FNC.
