A Gladstone Park man will face the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of drug trafficking, firearms and weapons offences.
Broadmeadows police intercepted the 34-year-old male at 1am at the Shell service station in Gladstone Park after he was spotted driving erratically.
Detective Sergeant Paul Berry said police found a 22 calibre semi-automatic pistol in his car.
Police conducted a search warrant at his Gladstone Park home where they allegedly found multiple loaded rifles, shotguns, a crossbow and a large amount of drugs, including ice.
“We will be alleging that we located a loaded handgun in his possession and further quantities of drugs,” Detective Sergeant Berry said.
Police are currently interviewing the suspect at the Broadmeadows police station.
Melbourne’s north-west was recently dubbed the “red zone” by police. According to figures from the Police Association, police are discovering guns in cars in the region, which includes Broadmeadows, every two days.
The latest Crime Statistics Agency figures, released last month, show an almost threefold jump in firearm offences in the north-west over the past five years, from 581 in the year to March 2011 to 1332 in the 12 months to April 2015.
