Girl, 10, escaped Mill Park stabbing incident

A 10-year-old girl escaped a stabbing incident in Mill Park that left a woman and six-year-old girl dead, police have revealed.

Emergency services were called to a Kellaway Crescent property about 7.50pm on Thursday night following reports of a stabbing.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said that upon arrival, responders found a 39-year-old woman who had suffered stab wounds.

She died at the scene.

“They also came across a 40-year-old male and they engaged with that male,” Detective Inspector Thomas said.

“As a result, that male proceeded to injure himself, and police had to take affirmative action and take him into custody.”

Detective Inspector Thomas said he believed officers used spray to assist in the man’s arrest.

He said a six-year-old girl was also found at the scene. She was taken to hospital, where she died from her injuries this morning.

A 10-year-old girl “managed to escape and flee”, he said.

“She was not physically injured,” Detective Inspector Thomas said.

“She’s currently in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services, and she’s been speaking to police overnight.

“She’s been through an absolutely terrible, traumatic incident … and it’s really important that she’s provided with the care and support that she needs to navigate her way through this.”

Detective Inspector Thomas said police believe emergency services had been called to the property about 12.50pm on Thursday to complete an assessment of one of the occupants, and that the person was cleared at that time.

He said police were not searching for any other person in relation to the incident.

He said the man and woman were believed to be husband and wife, and the children a result of that relationship, although it is yet to be confirmed.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with footage or further information should contact Crime Stoppers.
