O’Herns Road freeway interchange relief

The long-awaited O’Herns Road freeway interchange will be built if Labor wins the federal election.

On Friday, Labor’s infrastructure and transport spokesman Anthony Albanese pledged $67 million to connect O’Hearns Road with the Hume Freeway if Labor is successful on July 2.

Mr Albanese said Labor would also provide $20 million to duplicate Craigieburn Road between Hanson and Dorchester roads.

He said the works, which were part of a $262 million package for roads in growth areas, would make a difference to the lives of people living in Whittlesea and Hume.

“Too many people are spending too much time travelling to and from work and recreational activities in their car rather than at home with their kids. That needs all levels of government to step up and invest in road infrastructure,” he said.

“We know that there is going to be enormous jobs growth here and what we want is for people to get to and from those jobs in an efficient manner.”

Work on the O’Herns Road interchange is expected to take 18 months and will include a diamond interchange with the freeway, the duplication of O’Herns Road to the east of the interchange and the construction of auxiliary lanes along the freeway between O’Herns Road and Cooper Street.

The state government has already committed $40.7 million to the project.
