Hume residents are urged to come together to discuss ways for supporting the diverse community in addressing racial discrimination at a series of upcoming forums in May.
It comes following a survey of the Hume community in 2023 by Victoria University, conducted as part of the “Understanding Reporting Barriers and Support Needs of People Experiencing Racism” project.
This project by Victoria University was one of seven groundbreaking studies funded by VicHealth designed to improve the health of communities by focusing on areas with the most impact.
Led by Dr Mario Peucker, the project’s research focused on barriers to reporting racism and the consequences related to having limited access to support after experiences of racism.
Hume residents were surveyed on topics including what discourages individuals from reporting and seeking support after experiences of racism, how the barriers they experience can be reduced, and what support is needed after experiencing racism.
These in-person sessions will unpack the research findings and attendees will have the opportunity to provide ideas on how to work together to foster community support and learn avenues for reporting racism or accessing support.
Session One will take place on Thursday, May 9 from 6.30pm to 8pm, with a dinner before at 6pm, at the Homestead Community and Learning Centre – 30 Whiltshire Drive, Roxburgh Park
Session Two will be the following Thursday, May 16 from 11am-12.30pm with a lunch at the conclusion, at the Holy Child Primary School Hub, 227 Blair Street, Dallas.
