Former Broadmeadows Primary School site earmarked for housing

The site of the former Broadmeadows Primary School is set to be sold for housing as part of a state government plan to build up to 100 social housing properties across Melbourne.

The 2.16 hectare site at 2-16 Nicholas Street has been deemed surplus to requirements and earmarked for rezoning and development under the government’s Inclusionary Housing Pilot.

The pilot, which was announced earlier this year, aims to boost Victoria’s social housing stocks by building up 100 properties across six sites.

Private and social housing will be built on the land, which will be developed by a private builder in conjunction with community housing providers.

It is not yet known how many private and social housing properties will be built on the site.

A spokesman for Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the pilot would provide houses for Victorians most in need of a roof over their heads.

“The Inclusionary Housing Pilot is about making the most of land we already have to build more affordable, high-quality housing for Victorians,” the spokesman said.

“Leveraging the value of surplus government land in exchange for developer-led social housing is a win for the taxpayer and a big boost to affordable housing in Victoria.

“We are building brand new, properly-designed housing in places where people want to live and work.”

The plans will be assessed by an independent advisory committee to determine the suitability of the site and the appropriate planning controls for the development.

Residents can view plans for the site at the Hume Global Learning Centre (HGLC), 1093 Pascoe Vale Road, Broadmeadows until Friday, December 22.

A public information session will be held at the HGLC on Thursday, December 14, 6.30-7.30pm.

It is expected that a public hearing will be held in February next year, with the committee to report back to Mr Wynne by mid-March.
