Sixteen pupils from Hume have received scholarships to help with the cost of starting secondary school.

Pupils from Bethal Primary School in Meadow Heights, Coolaroo South Primary School, Gladstone Views Primary School and Holy Child Primary School in Dallas shared in $8000 from Melbourne Airport and Banksia Gardens Community Services’ joint scholarship program.

Melbourne Airport corporate and public affairs executive Jai McDermott said the grants were developed to support families with the cost of books, technology and uniforms.

“Our scholarship program gives local students the best possible start to their secondary education,” he said.

Bethel Primary School principal Terea DeMercurio said pupils and their families would benefit from the additional support,  making the transition into secondary school less stressful.

“The scholarship will lessen the financial burden that comes with purchasing uniforms and books when children begin their secondary education,” she said.

“As quiet achievers, these children and their positive attitude towards their education, they will certainly continue to uphold the school values of respect, collaboration and perseverance.”

Coolaroo South Primary School principal Karen Nicholls said scholarships play an important role in paving the way for students to be successful in their initial years of secondary schooling.

“For a family, it can relieve some of the financial pressure allowing them to focus their energy on ensuring their children are healthy and happy,” she said.
