Motorists will find it easier to navigate their way through Greenvale, with Fleetwood Drive finally re-opening.

Fleetwood Drive was closed at Somerton Road to enable the construction of a new intersection 20 months ago. The work was meant to take six months, however the road only re-opened this week.

The drawn-out closure frustrated residents and was raised in state Parliament by Northern Metropolitan Liberal MP Evan Mulholland, at during a July Hume council meeting.

Council wrote to the Department of Transport and Planning and Jemena seeking advice on the anticipated completion and reopening of the intersection, with both parties telling Star Weekly that a third party contractor was responsible for the hold-up.

News of the intersection’s reopening was celebrated on social media, with Greenvale residents welcoming the long-awaited re-opening.

Mr Mulholland said residents were sick of the gridlock caused by the closure.

“They just wanted this road opened and the project complete,” he said.

“The Empire State Building was built in 14 months. It is disgraceful that state government allowed this road project to drag on and take 20.”
