Five killed in helicoper crash

Five people have been killed after a helicopter crashed at Mount Disappointment on Thursday, March 31.

Police believe the chartered helicopter had taken off from Moorabbin Airport before picking up passengers in Batman Park, Melbourne about 7am on Thursday.

The flight was destined for Ulupna, located in northern Victoria, according to police.

The Police Air Wing located the wreckage in the vicinity of Blair’s Hut about 11.45am.

Police said the pilot and four passengers died at the scene.

The deceased include a 32-year-old man from Cheltenham, a 50-year-old woman from Inverloch, a 73-year-old man from Albert Park, and two men from New South Wales aged 59 and 70.

The search and rescue operation is being supported by SES, including the Whittlesea unit, and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, who have helped in clear a path to the crash site with bulldozers and an excavator.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined and will be investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
