Five people from Hume and two people from Whittlesea have died with COVID-19.

Health Minister Martin Foley confirmed the deaths today, reporting that two women in their 80s, a man in his 80s, a woman in her 70s, and a woman in her 50s, all from Hume, as well as a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s, both from Whittlesea, were the seven recorded deaths in the past 24 hours with the virus.

“Can I use this as an opportunity to pass on all Victorians’ deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the community of those people whose lives have been lost,” Mr Foley said.

Acting chief health officer Ben Cowie said that of the 950 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases recorded over the past 24 hours, 240 were in Hume and 102 were in Whittlesea.

Professor Cowie cautioned a rise in daily figures of the virus, and urged vaccination.

“We know… that case numbers will continue to climb,” he said.

“But it is absolutely within our power to slow the spread, and to prevent thousands of cases, and hundreds of people from becoming seriously ill, and some people losing their lives.

“We can do that by following the public health directions, social distancing, and of course getting vaccinated.

“Vaccinations remain our best weapon to fight back against this deadly virus.”
