Five arrested after policeman bashed in Campbellfield

A police officer has been bashed by five men while trying to perform a late-night breath test in Campbellfield.

It is believed the men were suspected of drag racing in the area before they were intercepted in Lara Way

The Fawkner Highway Patrol member and a partner had intercepted a silver Commodore sedan  about midnight on Tuesday after seeing sparks coming from one of the wheels of the car.

The two officers spoke to the five occupants of the Commodore, but when one of them went to the police car to retrieve a breath testing unit the group allegedly set upon the remaining officer.

The Senior Constable sustained multiple facial and leg injuries and had to be treated in hospital. His injuries are not life threatening. The other officer, also a male Senior Constable, while uninjured, is believed to have been shaken by the incident.

Sergeant Wally Siebold, who is also a member of the Fawkner Highway Patrol, said the senior constable, who he was not allowed to name, has was now resting at home.

“He wasn’t in hospital for long,” he said.

The five men retreated inside a building, and were arrested there early on Wednesday morning.

The men, aged in their twenties, are from Roxburgh Park, Meadow Heights, Craigieburn, Campbellfield and Rossmore, NSW.

They have been released pending further enquiries.
