An Epping local has become the country’s first carbon-neutral tradesperson under the federal government’s Climate Active initiative.

Eco-Green Garden Care founder and horticulturalist Stuart Griffiths has been certified as the first carbon-neutral tradesman thanks to his small business, which provides landscaping and gardening services across Melbourne.

According to the Department of Industry, the certification is the first under the non-office small business umbrella of the initiative.

Mr Griffiths said he wanted to lead the industry down the path to sustainability whilst maintaining a profitable business.

“A business can be both environmentally sustainable and financially successful and that’s what I want people to realise,” Mr Griffiths said.

“My commitment to reducing carbon emissions doesn’t stop with my own business.

“I’m endeavoring to work with suppliers [and] clients to help them reduce their carbon emissions and move toward becoming carbon neutral.

“If we can establish a series of sustainable businesses, we can then start creating sustainable supply chains.”

Mr Griffiths said the way he runs Eco-Green Garden Care is focused on sustainability.

”While gardening and landscaping is what we do, our business mission is to help people feel good about the choices they make in their business and personal lives,” he said.

“Sustainability is central to what we do.”
