Police are investigating multiple fires believed to be caused by fireworks across Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
Emergency services responded to the first blaze at the corner of Bindi Street in Glenroy on December 31 about 4.30pm.
Upon further investigation, the remnants of a firework were located.
The second fire was reported by witnesses in Kurunjang who told officers they saw four people on motorbikes set off fireworks in a paddock on Minns Road about 9pm.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire and the offenders fled before police arrived on scene.
Lastly, residents in Greenvale reportedly heard fireworks in the area shortly before a fire was discovered near Darmain Drive just after 10pm.
All three incidents will be investigated, and enquiries remain ongoing.
Despite no serious harm caused on this occasion, fireworks carry the risk of serious injury or death, whilst being unpredictable and volatile items that can result in fires – both grassfires and bushfires – as well as causing substantial property damage.
Anyone thinking of using illegal fireworks or flares should reflect on whether they want to risk being responsible for an out-of-control fire, or the death or serious injury of another person.
Commercial fireworks are classed as an explosive and banned for use by the general public because they are extremely dangerous in untrained hands.
