Hume pet owners are being reminded to keep a close eye on their pets in the festive season, especially during fireworks.
Mayor Carly Moore said that while most people enjoyed the colour and excitement of a fireworks display, pets often become frightened and try to escape the noise.
“Dogs and cats have incredibly sensitive hearing,” she said. “Some pets that are normally placid and not prone to escaping or running away often become frightened and will try to escape the noise.
“While cats are more likely to instinctively hide, dogs can jump a fence that under normal circumstances is high enough to secure them – either way, nobody wants their pets to go missing.”
Pet owners are being encouraged to contain their animals in their houses or garages overnight, or leave them with a friend or family member.
Cr Moore said council rangers found many pets wandering the streets after being spooked by fireworks.
“Owners need to do everything they can to ensure both cats and dogs are safe and secure,” she said.
“All Hume residents should also ensure that their pet is microchipped, registered and wearing a current registration tag – this will help council reunite the cat or dog with its rightful owner.”
