Firefighters stopped grassfire spreading in South Morang

Firefighters stopped a fire spreading in South Morang on Monday, controlling the blaze in just over two hours.

The CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews were called to the fire near the intersection of Topaz Grove and Girvan Place at 6.04pm on Monday 26 January.

Firefighters responded to alerts of a column of smoke, and arrived on scene to find a grassfire, one hectare in size, in a partial bushland area.

The response was escalated, with seven FRV appliances, 15 CFA appliances and two water-bombing helicopters involved in fighting the fire.

Helicopters were used to attack the fire in difficult to access bush areas, before the fire was deemed under control at 8.14pm.

Police are investigating the use of privately operated drones over the fire ground which temporarily stopped air operations.

Assistance from Forest Fire Management Victoria has also been requested as the fire made some trees hazardous in the area.

VicEmergency released an alert for locals to stay informed.

There is no immediate threat to nearby communities, but there may still be visible smoke.

Fire crews will remain in the area as temperatures soar above 40 degrees today.
