The Country Fire Authority will carry out a planned burn on Monday afternoon at a large private property in South Morang.
Firefighters will begin a fuel reduction burn on a 10-hectare property between Regent Street, Mernda, and Quarry Hills Park, South Morang, at 1pm. The burn is expected to continue until 4pm.
The CFA’s vegetation management officer Stephen Hull said that fuel reduction burns conducted during the cooler months were one of the most effective methods available to lessen bushfire risk.
“As a result of the work we are doing today, any bushfire that goes through the area in future will burn with far less speed and intensity, making it more manageable for firefighters and less likely to impact life and property.
He said planned burning also helps the environment, and many species of plants and animals have come to depend on fire to survive.
Mr Hull said landholders with large areas of bushland occasionally sought assistance or advice from CFA to reduce the fuel on their properties.
Planned burns on public land are carried out by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
Local roads and other nearby services will not be affected.
People who suffer from asthma, heart or lung conditions are advised to stay indoors while the planned burn is under way. Those who experience adverse symptoms should seek medical advice or call Nurse-On-Call on 1300 606 024.
