Fire breaks out at local business

Turners Bakehouse Eatery in Mernda caught fire last night (Supplied).

Mernda CFA was called out to a fire at Turners Bakehouse Eatery last night (May 31) at about 5pm.

The back of the bakery was lost during the fire but the CFA said “thankfully” no one was present at the time of the incident.

Fire Rescue Victoria and Doreen CFA assisted Mernda CFA with controlling the fire and SES Whittlesea’s unit controller for advising them about the situation.

The bakery took to their socials to thank the CFA for their work.

“Massive thank you to everyone involved in helping to contain the fire and minimise the damage, the fast action by our neighbors in alerting the CFA and immediate action taken by Mernda CFA Doreen CFA SES Whittlesea Unit Fire Rescue Victoria has literally saved the property and our business.”

Locals shared their sentiments and words of support.

“So sorry this has happened Matthew- but glad no staff were injured. You have the community’s support,” Dianne Baillie said.

The cafe reopened this morning (June 1) for takeaway, serving their customers once again.

The CFA said they’d be there for a beverage and pastries.

“We are thrilled to hear that you are still able to open! Our crews will definitely come and buy a coffee and pie tomorrow!”
