Broadmeadows is set to receive a $14 million windfall from the state government to refurbish the suburb’s languishing town hall and train station.

This afternoon Premier Daniel Andrews announced the state government would contribute $7 million towards Hume council’s $20.2 million redevelopment of the Broadmeadows Town Hall.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou cracked open a bottle of champagne this afternoon in celebration of the funding announcement.

“This is very good news,” she said. “This redevelopment will encourage employers to establish themselves in the heart of Broadmeadows, a suburb which has endured high jobless figures for far too long,” she said.

“We want the town hall to once again be the focus of civic pride, with large and spectacular halls that can house ceremonies, festivals, and music events.”

The train station is set to receive $4 million. The funds will help pay for a new entrance at the north of the station, improve the station’s pedestrian subway and build new toilets.

Another $1 million will go towards new street trees and pedestrian crossings in Pascoe Vale Road, near the station entrance, and another $2.15 million towards the construction of Meadowlink, a “green corridor” that will connect Moonee Ponds and Merlyston creeks via a 3.2-kilometre pedestrian and bike path.
