Essential workers thanked

Yuroke MP Ros Spence

The year 2020 challenged all of us in many ways, but it also showed the incredible dedication of our essential workers at all levels.

As the global pandemic continues to affect us, it’s the dedication of our local workers who give me confidence that we’re up to the challenge—and I want to say thank you to each and every one of them.

As I welcomed students and educators to two brand new primary schools, Keelonith in Greenvale, and Gaayip-Yagila in Mickleham, I also took the opportunity to thank all involved for making remote learning work in 2020.

I can’t wait to welcome even more smiling students at Kalkallo Common Primary School and Greenvale Secondary School (interim names) in 2022.

Road users in Craigieburn would have been delighted to see workers on-site doing early works ahead of major construction starting on the long-awaited duplication of Craigieburn Road. This work will help minimise disruption by identifying underground utilities. I can’t wait to see major construction kick off on this much-needed project.

Train commuters have a better experience to look forward to as well when the 745 new parking spaces open at Craigieburn railway station, taking capacity to well over a thousand parking spaces. This will reduce on-road parking in nearby residential areas and give commuters more options for travel.

As we’ve seen, the need for skilled workers across a range of industries is more important than ever. That’s why I’m so proud of Free TAFE, which connects people needing skills to training in an industry that needs them. This jobs pipeline is already helping us build the big projects like the Metro Tunnel that will change how we travel in Melbourne.

Being appointed as Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Minister for Community Sport, and Minister for Youth last year was an incredible honour. This is especially so because I represent a community that is diverse, a community that loves our local clubs, and a community with so many young people with such bright futures ahead of them.
