Work has finally started on the missing link in Whittlesea’s road network – the extension of Edgars Road.
Whittlesea council and the Epping community have been campaigning for the extension of Edgars Road from Cooper Street and O’Herns Road for a number of years.
They say the extension will provide an essential north-south connection and ease congestion around the High and Cooper streets precinct.
Developer MAB Corporation has committed to delivering the one-kilometre stretch of road as part of its Alliance Business Park development.
The developer says the work will be complete by late next year.
MAB commercial and industrial general manager Michael Martin said residents currently faced extensive delays getting on to the Hume Freeway.
“MAB’s delivery of Edgars Road will unlock congestion for approximately 45,000 residents in Epping North and hundreds of businesses in the area,” he said.
“The investment in road infrastructure being delivered for this area will immensely benefit local businesses, providing faster and easier access to the Hume Freeway, giving them a competitive advantage.”
Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox said the Edgars Road announcement was a welcome outcome for local commuters and the community.
“This is a very exciting announcement because we know traffic congestion is a huge issue in our community,” he said.
“We’ve been working collaboratively with MAB to successfully deliver this integral road network upgrade.”
