Heather Strong has always been drawn to helping people.
The Doreen resident is in the second year of a nursing degree at RMIT and will be heading to Tanzania next year to volunteer at a children’s hospital.
While in Tanzania, Ms Strong will also be working on a research proposal, examining the environmental sustainability of isolation gowns.
The trip, which has been organised by healthcare placement organisation, Work the World, is expected to cost about $7000. To help with the cost, Ms Strong is hoping to secure $4000 in sponsorship from local businesses. She has already received $1000 from Bundoora Rotary Club.
Ms Strong said the placement was something she had long wanted to do.
“I already volunteer with Austin Health and St John Ambulance. Now, I want to give back on an international stage,” she said.
“I have always been drawn to helping people and always wanted to save lives.”
