Donated bears provide big hugs for Craigieburn and Broadmeadows kids

Children attending Craigieburn and Broadmeadows police stations will have hand-knitted dolls and bears to cuddle during times of distress, thanks to the generosity of a group of Craigieburn retirees.

The craft group from Stockland’s Highlands Retirement Village knitted more than 70 dolls and teddy bears to donate to the two police stations.

Retirement village resident Melody Musgrove came up with the idea after hearing about a Whittlesea group that created comfort rugs for a police station.

“When local police came to our village to give a talk on safety and security, I asked them if there was anything that we could give them to help kids they meet on their calls and we just went from there,” she said.

“We wanted to help in any way that we could.”

Billie Logan created most of the donated bears and said that joining the knitting group was an easy decision.

“I enjoyed making them knowing that they would be going towards helping a child through a tough situation; that they had something to cuddle up to and get support from,” she said.
